Mr. Bradley English 11 January 14, 2014 The Difference Between 1925 and 2014 2. If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? In the year 2014 people are more likely to cheat on his/her spouse which is way different that what happened in 1925. When this book was written cheating wasn't as common. People in 1925 did not really understand why one would cheat on his/her spouse. And the prohibition was around this time, and in The Great Gatsby a huge amount of the characters drank alcohol. Which became a huge problem. Along with the Prohibition Era and cheating, getting a divorce also was more common in 2014 than it was in the year 1925. Which is odd because people in 1925 still drank and had parties when they were not supposed too. On page 26 of The Great Gatsby it talks about when Myrtle is going to go meet up with Tom so they can see eachother again. It says “I want to see you,” said Tom intently. “Get on the next train.” “Alright”” I am able to use this because I will be talking about how cheating was not common back in 1925. But that does not mean that nobody did it, especially in this book. Even though cheating was not common many people in this book cheated. For example Daisy cheated on Tom with Gatsby and Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle, who is married to Wilson. Now saying that, the characters in this book may have cheated like when Daisy cheated on Tom with Gatsby and when Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle. But that doesn't necessarily mean that everyone in 1925 cheated on his/her spouse… which they didn't because as I said before it was very uncommon. Now in the year 2014 many couples get a divorce. People that see couples getting divorced don't judge them as much as people did in 1925. Now they just say “sorry it didn’t work out and I hope you can find someone that will make you happy.” In the year 2014 couples got divorced because of financial problems, miscommunication, not receiving the affection they need from his/her companion, having trust issues, being insecure, and abuse. Those 6 reason are completely different than what couples would have got a divorce in 1925. Now in 1925 people got divorced because they were not happy and he/her wanted someone else. A huge difference in the reasoning for why people get divorced. But when it really comes down to it, is it really that big of a difference? I mean in 2014 all those reason if you actually think about it mean that someone in the relationship is not happy… which is one of the reasons people got divorced in 1925. Moving on from why people get divorced, and why they cheat on each other lets talk about the Prohibition Era. In this book there was a plethora amount of people that drank. Which was a horrible decision because the Prohibition Era started in 1919, which meant that if Gatsby or any other character in the book got caught with alcohol they would have got in a colossal amount of trouble. On pages 42-44 it talks about when Gatsby had a huge party and all the people that went to it when they were not supposed to. “Do you come to these parties often” is something Jordan said while at Gatsby's party. The complete opposite of that is the alcohol use 2014, you can’t go anywhere without seeing a store that sells liquor or some time type of alcohol. It is very common to see or hear about people drinking now a days. In fact 55% of people in high school have drank in the last month and 65% of all those who have graduated college drink. People who lived in 1925 would probably despise all the people that drink now. Saying that I am talking about all those people who actually listened and obeyed the Prohibition Era, not those that drank daily. Because those who did drink back then would most likely start drinking with those who are drinking now. Back then even when there was a Prohibition Era people just did not obey it just like people in 2014 don’t listen to some of the laws now. To conclude what has been previously said 1925 and 2014 are dramatically different. I can support that because in this essay I have information from the book The Great Gatsby, therefore in 1925 it was uncommon to hear about someone cheating on his/her spouse as well as hear about a couple getting a divorced and in 2014 you can hardly go a day without reading or listening about how this person and that person cheated on each other or how these two got a divorce. Also in 2014 people drink daily anf go to clubs. It’s not unusual to see someone drinking which is different from 1925 when drinking, selling, manufacturing, was banned.
