Mr. Bradley English 11 Today’s Date Who Wrote The Letters? Writing a Children's Book I am turning Chain Letters written by Christopher Pike into a children's book. Chain Letters is a book about a group of teenagers who go out one night then an accident happens. From that night on everybody's life changed. Maybe it changed for the good and maybe it changed for the bad, either way it changed. Now turning this book into a children’s book is very difficult. That is because the theme of this book is more for those who are older and like mysteries, therefore it was hard because small kids do not usually know what they like to read about. In order to turn Chain Letters to a children’s book I had to make some changes. First I had to think of how I was going to make a group of small children do something bad enough to change their lives forever. Knowing that children get in trouble all the time I had to come up with something that wasn’t too grown up but not too childish either. Incorporating the “caretaker” into the book was probably the most difficult. The caretaker is the person who changed the teenagers lives for good. He is the person who made them do the unthinkable… he made them go crazy. Not only did he mess with their physical appearance he mentally drained them. The caretaker is not just a character to blow off, so incorporating him in the book is was a challenge. Although it was a difficult it was not impossible. After I brainstormed for awhile I was able to think of a way to bring the caretaker into a children's book. Throughout the book there are a numerous amount of things happening. Many of them you would never even be able to fathom. From cutting off fingers to killing someone… these teenagers did not have an option when it came to the caretaker. You either did what he told you to do or you died, end of story. However the caretaker never uncovered in true identity he always stayed hidden and secretive. Although he was secretive he watched the teens like hawks and he “talked” to them through a way that surprised me. He wrote them letters and personally delivered them to each and every one of the teenagers houses. It caught me off guard because if he was trying to be distant but close as possible without them knowing why didn’t he communicate with them in a different way, letters personally delivered are a bit too close. However he also communicated to them through the newspaper. He wrote the teenagergs challenges in there. Putting all that into a children's book sounds difficult but it really wasn’t. All you have to do is imagine who the “caretaker” would be to children, then go from there. Towards the end of the book the group of children will become very familiar with who the caretaker is. He does not show himself but they keep getting closer and closer. The children become smarter and quick thinkers throughout the process of trying to figuring out who the caretaker is. Not only are they getting smarter they are getting older. Therefore they are learning how to lie and keep secrets better. Although it is probably not very good that that is happening its happening. Towards the end of the book the children think they know who it is.
