Mr. Bradley English 11 5/20/15 1984 If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? Different times means different ways of talking. The way people talk and comprehend things is different. It all depends on when it is being spoken or written. Therefore if 1984 had been written in a different year such as 2010 the wording throughout the book would be completely different. However since the book was published on June 8, 1949 in London most people now will find it hard to comprehend or difficult to finish the book. For example when it says “you telling me you ain't got a pint mug in the ‘ole bleeding boozer?”. People do not talk like that anymore. If this were written in 2010 the wording would be close to “You’re telling me that you don’t have a pint mug”. That would be more comprehensible to those reading 1984 these days. Although it may be more comprehensible to people these days George Orwell wrote the book this way because it is what made sense to him. How could he have known that the book would become very well known. Throughout the book Orwell used a variety of different ways to say things. “Oh, rubbish!” (136), is just one example. Like I had said before if 1984 had been written or rewritten in 2010 I as well as many others would actually know what these odd phrases mean, and how to use them in a sentence. Instead of saying “Oh rubbish!”, one would now say “That’s garbage”. Do you see the difference in how direct and demanding “That’s garbage”, is?. Most people would, however not all. People who are older may know how to comprehend this book better just because of the generation they grew up in. But for us who are 20 years of age and less, we have trouble understanding it. Also back then the government controlled EVERYTHING. If you have read 1984 you know what I mean. Not only did the government control everything they watched the people like hawkes. The government got favorited as well, they got special treatment and better conditions than those who are less fortunate or those who disagree with what the government is doing. “Its inner party coffee…” (141), is one example I’m giving you. This one example shows what those who are not in the government or in the inner party think as well as get treated as. They get treated like garbage. It didn’t matter if you have(had) money. If you are not apart of the government or disagreed with what the government was doing you automatically got watched like a hawk and was treated like a 3 year old who just learned how to walk. This book contained many different situations people were out through. And with all the “old” london language it was difficult to understand. Therefore I believe that if this book were written in 2010 I would have been able to clearly understand what was being told throughout the book. Also I might have been able to relate to some of book if it was written in a different time.
