English 11 4th hr. Am I Spending My Money Right? Clothes, shoes, makeup, food are all great things. However should I really be spending my money on them. Being a junior in highschool it is hard to not just go blow money on whatever I want. I should be saving my money for a vehicle and college. Thankfully I am not the only teenager that doesn't save my money. Many teenagers are able to spend their irresponsibly because they have more time on their hands. Unlike adults, who have jobs and may or may not have children. Teenagers are able to go to malls or others stores with their friends and don’t have to care about how they are spending their money because it is most likely their parents money. Also since it may be the parents money it is also the parents fault for their children not knowing how to properly spend their money. If the parents are just giving money to their kids and not asking them what they are going to spend it on or how much they plan on actually spending they are setting their kids for failure. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the-characteristics-of-teenage-spending.htm

Shalene Kirchmeier Mr. Bradley English 11 April 22, 2015 Frustrations With The Sport You Can't Live Without A team is a family. And that is what our soccer team is. We need everyone to be there and we need everyone to be supportive. So that's what I did. And now, finally being able to play makes me feel like I am part of the family again. I just got released to play from my doctor yesterday and I am beyond excited…. Oh wait, I still can’t play. The doctor did not write what he prescribed me medicine for, he just released me. And our athletic directors decided she needs him to have it on the release forum. “You can just fax it to the school”, she said to my step-mom. So here I am waiting for the fax to come. Ten minutes go by… Thirty minutes go by. Then soon enough the Soccer game starts and still not fax. “Really, where the hell is the fax” I said to Victoria, who is a player on the team. I can not even explain how upset I was. However, it was not the doctors fault. No matter how much I wanted to blame it on the doctor I could. The doctors office was out of power and wasn’t able to fax it over. My first thought when I heard that was “Oh so why don't they have a generator or something, it’s a damn doctors office. What if someone really needed to be seen… they are screwed.”. But like I said I can’t really blame the doctor himself for not sending the fax over. Now we have one day before our third game this week and I am overjoyed in the fact that I am able to play. However I am not so excited to be having practice in the snow today. “It is April… not December. So why is it snowing?”. Saying that I don't want to complain about having practice. That is because I have not been able to play ALL season. I miss playing soccer so unbelievably much. Yes I am going to miss watching them playing from the sidelines only because I can see everybody and the whole field. But what I've missed the most is being able to play with Syd. We have played together since we were 4 years old and im glad we've played together so long. When someone on the team gets hurt, we BOTH make sure that they wished they didn't. After you have played a sport with someone for so long it’s weird not being able to. And now that I can actually play and participate I can not wait to take someone out… Wait, I meant to say “help the team win”. You win and lose as a team. You fail and you succeed as a team. But you do not do it by yourself. Springport Varsity Soccer is about winning and losing as a team, it is never one persons fault. And we even go through teammates not being able to play. We try our absolute hardest to get numbers on the scoreboard, whether its with the whole team or half the team. We are a family.

Mr.Bradley English 11 April 22, 2015 We all have those times where we get hurt when we are playing the sports we love. But do we all have to miss 3 weeks of it because you have headaches? Well I did. Student athletes should be able to play until they can NOT play anymore. Four weeks ago I had to take a concussion/baseline test, and lets just say I did not do so well. My percentage in everything decreased. So the athletic trainer at our school decided I needed to take a week of of doing anything physical. So I said “Ok that’s fine it is spring break anyways”, but honestly I was pissed that I wasn't able to do anything. However I respected the fact that she was trying to help me. Two weeks later here I am still sitting on the bench. Not only was it the athletic director, it was also my doctor. When I went to doctors last Saturday he said “I’m not exactly sure what is wrong. I think you need to make an eye appointment with your eye doctor”. To add on top of my parents and I being mad, the doctor just put my symptoms into something called a “Randomizer”. It’s something doctors can just type in the clients symptoms and then it will tell the doctor different types of medications that the client could possibly use. So I was written a prescription that was decided by a damn computer. It might just be me, but I am pretty sure that doctors get paid to know things that general people do not know. Such as why I have had a headache for a month and a half. Although my prescription was chosen by a computer, I’m not complaining. They medicine I have to take does get rid of my headache, which I greatly appreciate. Even Though they get rid of my headache I was not able to play soccer until today. I missed 7 soccer games because of these stupid headache. At first I was ok with not playing because I did not want to get hurt, but after the 3rd game I was LIVID. I am part of the team and I felt like I wasn’t because I missed so many games. What I mean by “missing” soccer games, is that I wasn't able to play. I still went to the games and even practice to support my team. But even though I was there at practice and at games I still felt like I shouldn’t be there. That is because I wasn’t doing anything, I couldn’t practice and I couldn’t play in the games. “So whats the point of being there if I couldn't do anything?” I thought to myself. But soon I realized that my team needed me whether I was playing or not. Works Cited:
Shalene Kirchmeier 4/13/15 English 11 Should the Legal Age of drinking alcohol? We all know that one person that goes out every weekend to get drunk. But the legal drinking age is 21, so why do they go out? Even Though they go out many or at least some people are mature about it. They do not drink until they can’t anymore every single time they go out. The age for drinking should be 17. Although 58% of males, and 47% of females 12 and older drink they dont ALWAYS get wasted. Many know there limit, or at least they know when to stop. Personally I have a few friends that go out on weekends to drink. And even though they go out they have never ended up being so drunk that they don't remember. Drinking is something you have to be responsible about, you can not just go out and get completely obliterated. Sometimes it may be fun, or you might want to because you had a bad week but you have to be smart about it. Since many people under the age of 21 drink already they just need to lower the legal drinking age. Like I said before 58% of males 12 and older have drank alcohol before. Just because the legal drinking age is 21 not a whole lot of people listen. They do not care about the legal drinking age, they only want to have a good time and do what they want. Although many people drink it does not mean that its the right thing to do. But that still does not mean that I agree with what the legal drinking age is now. It’s not fair that people get to vote when they are 18, also its not fair because people get to go to war when they are 18. People should be able to drink if they are able to choose if they want to go to war or not. Teenage girls everywhere are always getting put on the spot at school because what they are wearing. Whether it is the running shorts or the spaghetti strap tank top, we always get told to change. We should be able to express ourselves in whatever way we want, especially in the way we dress. It does not only let us express ourselves it lets us be independent. Having a dress code or school uniform could potentially make the student feel uncomfortable or like they do not fit in because they do not look good in the clothes they have to wear. Also schools that have a strict dress code or school uniform may be giving parents a hard time. That is because school dress codes make the parents go out and spend money on clothes for school. Same goes for school uniforms, school uniforms can cost up to $249 on average, as told by Lisa Runge, in an article called “School uniforms don't have to cost so much”. Teenage girls should be able to wear what they want. Although teachers say that students don’t listen, or can't concentrate in class because of what others are wearing they are incorrect. As said by Lisa Runge, students will be able to concentrate in class because they are not worried about getting in trouble, or what others are thinking of them because they are comfortable in what they are wearing. Personally I have had to change my clothes at school because some other students in my class we not able to concentrate because of what I was wearing. To inform you I was wearing shorts that were 5 inches from my knee. To be honest I as well as others strongly believe that what we wear should not be based on the fact that other students can not control themselves. Do you want your child to grow up properly? Being able to express oneself is a very important part of growing up. In an article called “Pros and Cons of School Uniforms” by Beth Asaff states that students who are not allowed to express themselves in the way they dress will choose to express themselves in more negative ways. Personally if my school required students to wear uniforms I would rebel, which is exactly what Beth Asaff said. Not only can students turn to making bad decisions they could turn to drugs and or alcohol, although many student do not take it that far. Many people say that school uniforms are less expensive than general clothing. If you actually think about all the possibilities they really are not less expensive. Students being able to wear what they want allows the parents to buy what the child want. For example if a student wants a shirt from Walmart they will be able to get it for a less amount of money. Even though school uniforms may last a little longer the child will want to get rid of them because they are too old. Therefore if students are able to wear what they choose they will want to wear it longer because they picked it out. Parents are forced to pay more for school uniforms, like said in “Parents forced to 'pay twice' for expensive school uniforms”. School Uniforms take away someones ability to express themselves, cost way more than general clothing students actually want to wear, as well as make students change because of other people. Students need to be able to express themselves, and they need to be able to dress how they want, instead of basing the dress code on the thoughts and actions of others. No they do not. They actually discourage teens. Teen pregnancy shows show as well as teaches teenage girls and boys how tough it is to be a parent as a teenager. Personally I watch Teen Mom 2 all the time and I find it very helpful, meaning it shows me how difficult it is to be a teen parent. But it also shows us teens how to be a good parent when the time is right.
According to source number 2 economics they found out that “shows like Teen Mom, and 16 and Pregnant is responsible for the 5.7% drop in teenage pregnancy” says Phillip B. Levine and Melissa Schettini Kearney. When I read an article from the New York Times, I found out that 16 and Pregnant prevented 20,000 births. Since the show was one many have said that the amount of pregnancies have went down dramatically like I have previously said. Although it has been proven that birth rates when down when 16 and Pregnant was starred nobody can ACTUALLY prove that it was because 16 and Pregnant went down, it might possibly be because of a different reason. Now saying that many studies have been done and those who have studied this topic are almost 90% sure that the pregnancy rate went down because of shows like Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant. When 16 and Pregnant first was on T.V. teen pregnancies dropped to a record low. And from 2009 to 2010 the pregnancy rate was 34.2 births per 1000 women aged 15-19, which is relatively low. Considering the fact that many teens were getting pregnant before the show was on. Teen Mom was originally put on T.V. to show young women how hard being a teen mom is, with all the drama, money that needs to be spent, and how to actually take care of a child. Also since the show has been on, more teen parents especially moms did not graduate high school. To be exact 40% of teen parents did not graduate high school, then when it was starred on T.V. the percentage went up. Don't you ever wish you would spend more time with someone, or do you ever think of what an actual conversation with that one person is like? Do you get upset because your boyfriend or girlfriend is snapchatting someone else? Well that is what life has become. Our lives just need to be simplified. We do not need all the technology we have today. We want it. Which sadly is very difficult to understand the difference between the two today. We mistake wants for needs when we really do not NEED some of the things we think are necessary now-a-days. To give you an example, lets use social media. Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. are all just wants. We want to show pictures of our delicious Chinese food we had for dinner last night and how much fun that party was last weekend. But we don't really NEED to. To be honest nobody really cares how good your food was or how much beer you drank at the party you went to. Technology is not needed. According to Nicholas Carr Google and technology in general is changing the was we think and act. Before Google (technology) became the next big thing people could start a book and finish it, they would not get distracted two paragraphs in. Back then people had to use a dictionary to find the definition of a word, and now children don't even know what a dictionary is. They as well as teenagers and adults automatically go to Google to search the word. We don't depend on dictionaries anymore, we depend on the world wide web. Our minds want to rely on the internet, we want to be lazy and dependent. But is it really helping us? Do you remember that hot summer day when you went on vacation with your family? No? Well if you took pictures you could remember. Now i am not saying everybody needs I-phones so we can take pictures, we could use the old school cameras that you but at Walmart then have to go back to get them printed off. Yes it is less convenient for us but we don't need the technology we have today, even though it would be nice sometimes. Memories are what is important not the technology we use to capture and remember them. To conclude what has previously been said we do NOT need the technology we have we want it. Its not necessary to have even though you may think so. Sources I used: "Where I lived, and What I lived For", by Henry David Thoreau "Is Google Making Us Stupid", by Nicholas Carr |
